The Coffee House Club

Richard Newman is a leading rug restorer and conservationist based in New York. His presentation to the Club will focus on washing rugs and their care.

“I love washing rugs…seeing the transformation….washing requires knowledge, experience and affection”

He will speak about the variables of rug washing (condition; density of weave; quality of dyes; and type of dirt). These variables make it impossible to wash all rugs in the same manner.

Mr. Newman’s clients include leading dealers, collectors, and major auction houses. He has lectured at ACOR, given college classes in conservation and weaving.

Members are encouraged to bring a rug for evaluation after the talk!

Mr. Newman will discuss each piece from a conservation point of view.
