Is it possible that the design of “Baluch” Camel Ground Tree of Life niche (“prayer”) rugs is really an echo of ancient Mesopotamian iconography? We will examine this idea and look at other connections between 19th century rug iconography and pre-Islamic symbols.

DeWitt Mallary has been a member of the Hajji Baba Club for more than 25 years. A major focus of his collecting has been “Baluch” rugs, about which he has given talks around American and Europe, as well as presentations at various international and American rug conferences. He is currently editing the translation of a soon-to-be-published new study of Turkmen carpets by Jürg Rageth of Basel, Switzerland. This talk, put together jointly by Mr. Rageth and Mr. Mallary, is a result of discussions and research in connection with that book.
