The Turkmen

Bag Face (torba), Turkmen
Central Asia
Mid-19th Century, Wool pile
114.3 x 53.25 cm (45 x 21 in)
Kurt Munkacsi & Nancy Jeffries

Studies of Turkmen weaving have not so far identified the tribal origin of this example. It has a design shared by many peoples in the Near East and Central Asia, both Turkmen and non-Turkmen. Here it is worked with graceful simplicity in colors that are both rich and restrained. It is the face of a shallow bag that was hung within the tent and used for small personal items.
