Baluch Small Bag (chanteh)
Iran, Baluchistan Region
19th Century, Wool flat weave
22.9 x 22.9 cm (9 x 9 in.)
Richard Stewart Collection
Though of no great age, this small bag scores highly for sheer visual excitement. It was woven as a single piece with a similar pattern on the back that is briefly interrupted at the fold at the base of the bag. It may well have been woven by a nomadic woman and was probably used for small personal items.
