Village and Commercial Rugs from Turkey

Cushion Cover (yastik)
Turkey
19th Century, Wool pile
64.1 x 118.1 cm (25 1/4 x 46 1/2 in.)
Donna Endres Collection, Austin, TX

As with the other yastik in this section, this example has a centralized medallion motif most likely derived not from velvet cushion covers but from a village-based, knotted-pile carpet tradition introduced to Anatolia from Iran during the sixteenth century and preserved in village weavings ever since.
