The endless-repeat pattern of this carpet, known as the “star” design, was popular among weavers in the town of Ushak, known since the fifteenth century as a center of commercial carpet production. This particular design probably originated in the fifteenth century and continued in production well into the seventeenth century and beyond. While exhibiting many strong similarities with other, older Star Ushak carpets, this example differs in the quality of its wool, its greater original size (it has been partially cut down), and the reduced saturation of its colors.
